Social maturity appears in any form of behavior that involves relation with others, whereas. Social maturity is the process of appropriate attitudes for personal, interpersonal and social adequacies of an individual which are essential for functioning effectively in the society.
Hurlock says that a socially mature individual conforms not so much because he approves of existing patterns of behavior or because of fear of others but to realize that each individual must be willing to fit his wishes into the pattern approved by the group as a whole.
Television and Aggressiveness
We have seen that television can facilitate the cognitive development of young children, provided they watch programs that have been specially designed to educate them, but that massive exposure to unselected television program is associate with lw reading scores on the part of older children.
According to John P. Murry 1973, the consequences of this violence are almost negligible, punching, kicking, biting even shooting do not seem to result in much suffering.
Common sense would suggest that there would be such imitation, yet there are very few violent acts actually committed by children compared to the amount of violence.
A study by Friederich & Stein 1973, Preschool children were observed for two weeks, then shown one of three types of television programs and finally observed for an additional three weeks. Children who had be noted during the initial two weeks as being more aggressive than the others, behaved in even more aggressive ways during the three week follow-up period, provide they had been shown violent cartoons during the previous four week period. But children who had been watching a prosocial program became more cooperative.
