Social Forces influence Student Behavior

Social influence is defined as change on an individual’s thought, feelings, attitudes or behaviors that results from interaction with another individual or a group. Actually social influence is distinct from conformity, power and authority.

The teacher and the peer group; Collaborators

The relationship between a group and a teacher is different from the relationship between a teacher and an individual student. Teachers forget too, that classroom groups are not as a rule mere collection of individuals, but have definite characteristic of their own. The development of group relationship is an important phase in the social and emotional development of children. Teacher need to learn how to work groups, rather than against them.

Cohesiveness;

Members of classroom groups who communicate well with their teacher and each other will enjoy being together. They will find working, learning and playing together a rewording and satisfying experience. Cohesiveness is also characterized by such feeling as loyalty, group pride, shared values and behavior patterns. It facilitates communication among group members, whereas lack of cohesiveness impedes it. A group may lack cohesiveness because members are so interested in their personal goals, needs and feelings that they can’t become interested or involved in group goals.

The psychological climate of the classroom;

Psychological climate, in fact, sets the conditions of behavior for any group. And it is a very strong Social Influence Factor. According to white 1939, the behavior of children was markedly altered when a change in the adult leadership of their group was accompanied by a change in the psychological climate. The three kind of climate-
1. Autocratic
2. Laissez faire
3. Democratic

The effect of competition on climate and cohesiveness

Competition is very much a part of our national life, and we could not keep it out of the schools if we tried. Many children particularly in the lower classes need to learn how to work within a competitive system without being continually defeated and discouraged by it. If competition is properly controlled, it can help make learning an interesting and stimulating experience, but if it is encouraged to the detriment of other goals such as that of learning how to work together cooperatively, it can break down group spirit and morale.
