Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP - Website Information

Food Benefits for Low Income Households

The Federal Food Stamp Program officially had its name changed on October 1, 2008. From now on the food stamp program will now be called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. Although, even though it has been in effect for a while now, most people still refer to it as their food stamps benefits. This is an important low income benefits program that strives to put healthy food into needy homes.

The only change to the program is effectively, its name. If you were receiving food stamps prior to the name change, nothing will change. You will still receive your benefits each month and use the plastic EBT debit card to make your purchases at stores and grocery outlets. SNAP is not a new program, and the name change will not have any effect on your benefits. If you are looking to qualify for and receive new benefits, food stamps, cash benefits or other assistance, you will need to contact your state or local welfare office. The EBT cards you receive for benefits are very much like debit cards and can be used at more than 170,000 authorized grocers and retail stores across the U.S.
