What are the properties of numbers used in measurement?

Numbers are the very basis of measurement and the number system is an important part of the general body of mathematics. According to Bertrand Russell, a number is a “class of all classes”. Numbers are some symbol or digits which are used to represent quantities.
There are three important properties of number used in measurement-
• Identity: The number or symbols that are used in mathematics are unique of each number.
• Rank order: Numbers, except for cases of equality, can be places in an incontrovertible order along a linear scale.
• Additivity: By additicity is meant the fact that the operation of addition gives results that are internally consistent.
Special cases of addition are-
Subtraction= addition of negative numbers.
Multiplication=Successive addition of same number
Division= successive subtraction
